The Eye-in-a-Care-Box (ECaBox) uses perfusion to preserve the viability of transplanted human eyes by maintaining oxygen and nutrients, allowing them to retain electrical signal transmission and light response. Experiments with pig eyes showed that perfused eyes retained these functions for up to 10 hours, while untreated eyes lost them quickly. Researchers aim to adapt the technology for human eyes, potentially enabling whole-eye transplants, and test it on human eyes to develop a portable version for surgical preservation.
