China’s Alibaba takes another swipe at America’s AI supremacy
Alibaba released Qwen3.8-Max, its latest AI model, claiming it can rival Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 in performance. With 2.4 trillion parameters, the model is positioned as the most advanced AI available, but it trails only Fable 5 on certain benchmarks. Alibaba plans to release the model’s weights next week, a trend that has become a key differentiator in the Chinese AI industry. The strategy aims to bolster China’s influence in global AI governance and promote domestic tech development, amid growing competition from US firms and open-weight model releases.
