The European Union has introduced AI transparency rules requiring companies to disclose when users interact with AI models and whether content is generated or altered by AI. These rules mandate the inclusion of machine-readable labels on synthetic content and require deployers to label AI-generated content that appears real. Non-compliance could result in fines up to €15 million, or 3 percent of global annual turnover. The labels, similar to those used by platforms like TikTok and Instagram, are optional but the EU emphasizes their mandatory nature.
